TREEHOUSE MEETS MINDBODY&BEATS

April 6, 2016

Today we bring to you a special Interview with the beatsmiths, MindBody&Beats. I think I first came across their name early 2015, when I discovered the features with Felly (2273) and instantly was impressed with the authenticity felt in the music. The production pair took those two features with Rob Fel even further by booking Felly & Gyyps for a couple shows in their hometown of Salt Lake, Utah.  An example for all y’all out there, that not only was a working relationship and friendship built, it was used to bring musicians together for their hometown peeps.

Now let’s focus on the sound of Twuan and Chief, the duo who make up MindBody&Beats, met in High School and have been growing together musically ever since. Diverse when it comes to their genres or definite style but when listening to the laid back, Hip Hop Influenced production I get a sense of the outdoors and peaceful, tranquil vibes. It’s not fake or forced you can feel every drum and chord, emotion evoking music.

Their latest project illustrates this, the music takes you on a journey. Features from Tim Gent and the massive track ‘Hands Up’ featuring TUT. MindBody&Beats is definitely a fitting title for them and we got the chance to find out more in an exclusive Interview.

TreeHouse meets MindBody&Beats

TREEHOUSE: Yo G's could you introduce yourselves, and tell us where you are from?

MINDBODY&BEATS:

I go by Chief, 18, from Salt Lake.

Yo I'm Twuan, 19 from Salt Lake City.

TREEHOUSE: When and why did you start making music?

CHIEF: Started making music in 7th grade because I loved music and realised early on the feelings/emotions it can give others.

TWUAN: I started my sophomore year of high school because I always had a passion for music and it was one of the only things that was always there for me.

TREEHOUSE: What kind of sound or style would you say you have?

CHIEF: The sound/style we have is mainly very laid back I like to think, bangers here and there but mostly songs to listen to when relaxing by yourself or other easy things to do.

TWUAN: I never know how to answer this question because we're always constantly trying new shit but i would say our sound/style ranges all over the place from mellow and upbeat to sad and happy shit.

TREEHOUSE: Being from Salt Lake City, which has so much beautiful nature, do your surroundings influence your music?

CHIEF: Our surroundings definitely influence our music. Now that it is started to become spring it rains and snows then gets sunny every other day so each day has a new mood new feeling and new sound to put out.

TWUAN: For sure. The weather and different seasons play a huge role in how we feel during the creation process

TREEHOUSE: Been a big fan of your work with Felly and 2273 how did that relationship come about?

CHIEF: The 2273/Fel relationship came about with the features we have. We got 2 then decided to start doing shows and hit up Fel for our first one and ever since we been staying in touch.

TWUAN: Yeah we did two songs with him and booked him and Gyyps for a couple shows and ever since then we've all been homies. Fel was one of the reasons why I really got into producing

TREEHOUSE: Who are your musical influences?

CHIEF: Musical influences would be mainly hip hop music but also friends we make music with, soundcloud stuff and MF Doom

TWUAN: My musical influences these days are mainly chief and other friends we make music with.

TREEHOUSE: Favourite artist right now?

CHIEF: Fav artist right now is Twuan or Mr. Carmack

TWUAN: kagwe or Anderson. Paak

TREEHOUSE: What's one thing you can't live without?

CHIEF: One thing I can't live without is music.

TWUAN: Music and water.

TREEHOUSE: What's one thing on your bucket list?

CHIEF: One thing on my bucket list is to headline a show or own 2 dogs.

TWUAN: I really want to buy my own island one day.

TREEHOUSE: Other than Hip-Hop what other genres are you interested in?

CHIEF: I like a lot of old rock and RnB, I love some smooth soul.

TWUAN: I’m into reggae, RnB and jazz. Bumping some George Benson as we speak.

TREEHOUSE: Favourite track right now?

CHIEF: Fav track right now is “if we meet again” by bsd.u

TWUAN: Right now probably "Leaves" by Dave B

TREEHOUSE: What is the coolest item you own (can be anything)?

CHIEF: The coolest item I own is probably my laptop my life is pretty boring other than the music stuff.

TWUAN: My fuckin Gameboy Color

TREEHOUSE: One instrument you wish you could play?

CHIEF: One instrument I wish I could play was the alto sax

TWUAN: I wish I could play the bass guitar. Definitely going to learn in the future

TREEHOUSE: What is your favourite sample from any track ever?

CHIEF: Great question. Favourite sample would have to be the sample in "brazillian blowjob" by Mr Carmack.

TWUAN: Too hard to name a favourite but if I had to say one it would be the sample in mac miller's "red dot music". The way alchemist flips that is crazy.

TREEHOUSE: One thing about the music Industry you would change?

CHIEF: One thing i would change about the industry is stop hyping the trash dudes and give real OG artists some recognition.

TWUAN: What chief said. There are too many amazing people out there who make amazing music and aren’t getting the love they deserve.

TREEHOUSE: In terms of your music, what are you trying to accomplish?

CHIEF: I'm trying to accomplish the act of transferring emotion through sound and spread the mindset that everything will be ok and to accept.

TWUAN: I’m also trying to accomplish being able to turn emotion into sound. But with music in general I want to connect with and inspire people to be better versions of themselves.

TREEHOUSE: If you could play a show overseas tomorrow where would it be?

CHIEF: The Caribbean islands

TWUAN: London boi

TREEHOUSE: Other passions beside music?

CHIEF: I love learning about the earth

TWUAN: I love to learn.

TREEHOUSE: What can you tell us about future projects?

MINDBODY&BEATS: Each project will most likely be a sound you haven't heard from us, but still our sound. We're always experimenting and trying new things to push our creativeness. Hopefully you like it!

TREEHOUSE: Yeah course man looking forward to it! Name one artist or collective who you want to point out for our audience?

CHIEF: Keep your eyes peeled for ‘Film Noir’ they are the Mozart’s of our generation.
