TREEHOUSE MEETS KAGE OTIM

February 17, 2016

2016 is in full swing now, no more of that 2015 hangover and I thought it was time to showcase artists who I feel will really establish themselves this year. Today I bring to you the amazing; singer, songwriter, producer and self-proclaimed child of soul, Kage Otim. He released his mixtape H7 last year, which included production from hit boy ‘Lehvi’ and features that included film noir’s talented vocalist ‘Vada’ and more.

Kage’s most recent releases have continued to see his following grow, as we are all starting to understand the essence of soulful words and melodies being showcased from the London based artist, and producer, especially on his track ‘Just for some time’

Other than being an artist, he is also the founder of collective ‘Forte Dreams’ and on the roster of, founded by WIZE, collective ‘Theorem Sound’. So there are MANY things to look forward to in the case of Kage Otim and we had a chat to discuss life, music and more in an interview below.

TreeHouse Meets Kage Otim

TREEHOUSE:Yo family could you Introduce yourself, and tell us where you are from?

KAGE OTIM: My name is Donald Otim but people know me by my stage name Kage Otim or La Soülchyld. I was born in Kigali, Rwanda 18 years ago but moved to Uganda where my mother is from until 2009 when I came to the UK to pursue my studies.

TREEHOUSE: When and why did you start making music?

KAGE OTIM: I started making music when I was 15 years old. I used to go on YouTube to search for beats to rap on. I wanted to show my school mates my talent at rapping. When I turned 17, I started learning how to produce music for myself. I started making music because I was told by my friends and teachers that I have a good voice, so I took that to heart and started writing.

TREEHOUSE: What kind of sound or style would you say you have?

KAGE OTIM: I would say I have a soulful sound. I have never really given a thought about what type of style I have. I just write what I feel and find ways to make it sound interesting.

TREEHOUSE: Who are your influences?

KAGE OTIM: Biggest influence to me is J.Cole. Other very important influences are Kendrick, Drake, Ty Dolla Sign, Kehlani, Chance The Rapper, Anderson Paak, Bj The Chicago Kid, D.R.A.M, Frank Ocean and just so many more.

TREEHOUSE: So tell us more about Forte Dreams and your goals for the collective?

KAGE OTIM: Forte Dreams was an idea I came up with in 2013 to create a roster that gave out beautiful energy. I always loved soul music and wondered how such a genre is not still as appealing as it was back then. So I wanted to create a collective with very soulful artists and talented producers that could get you feeling great when you hear their music.

TREEHOUSE: How did the link up with WIZE and Theorem Sound happen?

KAGE OTIM: I heard WIZE on the SoulEtiquette tape and searched him up because ‘’Alone Again’’ was my favourite track on there. I saw he had a collective and sent him an email to see if my style could fit with Theorem Sound. He liked the vibes and yeah now I am blessed to be in the same team as WIZE, Kazéangelo and Stanzah

TREEHOUSE: What do you think about the future scene developing in London?

KAGE OTIM: I think it's incredible. In my university not a lot of people know about it yet but I played them a few tracks and they were amazed. It really shows the producers skill, talent and I find it innovative. Personally, I find it way more enjoyable to listen to than some other genres.

TREEHOUSE: Favourite artist right now?

KAGE OTIM: It changes depending on who dropped a project or who is about to. So right now BJ The Chicago Kid, am very hyped for his album.

TREEHOUSE: What's one thing you can't live without?

KAGE OTIM: My computer. It has so much stuff on it like unreleased tracks, unreleased beats and samples I collected.

TREEHOUSE: What's one thing on your bucket list?

KAGE OTIM: To work with J-Louis. He is just amazing at what he does and to work with him would be dope.

TREEHOUSE: Favourite track right now?

KAGE OTIM: Montell2099- Possible

TREEHOUSE: One instrument you wish you could play?

KAGE OTIM: The bass! It is my favourite instrument.

TREEHOUSE: In terms of your music, what are you trying to accomplish?

KAGE OTIM: Make music that can help people cope through life and help the collectives I'm involved with grow.

TREEHOUSE: If you could play a show overseas tomorrow where would it be?

KAGE OTIM: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

TREEHOUSE: Other passions beside music?

KAGE OTIM: Writing animated stories and playing lots of video games.

TREEHOUSE: What can you tell us about future projects?

KAGE OTIM: I have a project coming out with KALA hoping to drop March or April, a joint EP with the home boy Jonah. Also, another EP being released by TheGoodVibeCo

TREEHOUSE: Do you believe that the new wave of Future sounds will be a big part of the scene?

KAGE OTIM: I hope so. I really want to hear more future beats on the radio because the feeling you get is just really indescribable. I know if I get signed by a major label I would only work with future beat producers because I really feel that's where music is heading.

TREEHOUSE: Name one artist or collective who you want to point out for 2016?

KAGE OTIM: montell2099. Mans on a different level.

TREEHOUSE: Who would you love to work with dead or alive?

KAGE OTIM: I’d love to work with Frank Ocean, I think we could make something crazy.

Big thanks to Kage Otim for taking time to have a chat with TreeHouse and we are eagerly awaiting his new projects and predict big things for him, Forte Dreams and Theorem Sound this year!
