Finding Shawn Harris around this time last year was quite exciting as he dropped a very well produced project called, MPLS: West End Stories, formerly known as Nikko Lafre. Although ties to this previous name have now ended, let me say that other than that, nothing has changed and the music is still 5th Gear.
The Minneapolis native delivers with a fierce flow, clean hooks and he's got bars. What more could you ask for. So if I had only one chance to convince you with a few of his songs, then I'd tell you to go listen to his previous work from the free LP on LiveMixtapes. With tracks like 'Ridin', 'Hometown Love', 'Enemies' and 'Nights In Minneapolis'.
This was then followed up with Troubled Soul: Blame The City, which was released in May earlier this year. Dabbling in some nice features from frequent collaborators and friends Johnny Rain and Drew Love. I must say Johnny certainly does reign on this tape with co-production partner K-Beatz who display their talents throughout, especially on tracks like 'TTINM' 'How It Look' and '4 A.M'.
This was the last of Nikko Lafre saga, but as of late, Harris has been releasing solo tracks on his Soundcloud.com/shawnharrisblk with some elite production on a few more of my personal favourites like, Fifth Of Henny, All Black, Dear Damisha and Love Like Drugs. His sound seems to have evolved from his Troubled Soul days which held a dark themed, cold city type feel to his music for those cold winter days. So is Harris making a transition to the rap/singing lane for good? I guess we'll see.
