Coen Rice is the founder of collective Concrete Crew, member of Hi-One’s Polyphone Squad and also a member of the TreeHouse Vibes Roster. Fair to say this guy is working. The alternative producer from Rotterdam, Netherlands is also a graphic designer which really illustrates his creativity. Speaking to Coen he expresses his passion for music and culture and in my opinion his sound is the future, mixing chilled; future, EDM, Bass, Hip-Hop and just plain old vibes to create pure feel good music.
TreeHouse Vibes x Coen Rice Interview:
TREEHOUSE: Introduce yourself, and tell us where you’re from?
COEN RICE: I am Coen Rice and I am 23 years old. Born and raised in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I’ve been on and off with school. I focused on my own web design, graphic design company for a while, but I wanted to take music more seriously. So now I’m saving money to live in Amsterdam next year and hopefully broaden my network and music style.
TREEHOUSE: When did you start making music?
COEN RICE: I've been making music since I was 4, started out playing the drums. Tried to play some piano but that didn't work out... later on a guy told me you could produce music with fruity loops. And that's where it all began. I’ve tried Ableton and Logic before I started taking music seriously year and a half ago. But I kept using FL.
TREEHOUSE: What kind of sound would you say you have?
COEN RICE: I never really try to stick with a particular genre. I love to experiment and I just make whatever I feel like, as long as it’s vibey to me. But if I must choose it think it would be a blend between Electronic Hip-hop and Future. I always try to bring banging drums, clean sounds and swinging melodies. Every new beat is another challenge for me to step my game up.
TREEHOUSE: Where is your favourite place in the world?
COEN RICE: So many places man, but I guess if I have to pick one, it must be Amsterdam. There are so many things going on there. I like the big crowdy places. But I guess I would try London, Los Angeles maybe and perhaps Ibiza just to chill [laughs]
TREEHOUSE: What's one thing you can't live without?
COEN RICE: Gotta be cliché about this one. Must be music, I make music everyday. It’s like therapy to me.
TREEHOUSE: What's one thing on your bucket list?
COEN RICE: Tell Nicki Minaj her ass is hella fine[laughs]. Kidding, I think I would try to compose a song and get an orchestra behind it, that would be so sick!
TREEHOUSE: Favourite track right now?
COEN RICE: I have a few man:
Monte Booker - 2099 Flow
Blackbear - Black Roses
Elhae - Love A Nigga
Marcioz - Last Eyeball Catch
Drake - Charged Up
Tekvision – Popsiclist
Buji – Back Like I Never Left
Tennyson – With You
JP Cooper – Satellite ( shoutout Tobias Dray )
TREEHOUSE: One instrument you wish you could play?
COEN RICE: The piano. That's the one instrument I would die for... You can do so much with music when you can play the piano. For instance, quality chords... I watch people play gospel chops on the drums sometimes, and you have this sick piano player in the background coming up with those jazzy kind of chords. Goosbumps man [laughs]! I might take lessons soon, who knows!
TREEHOUSE: Where would you want to do your first show overseas?
COEN RICE: Man, that would be Los Angeles. Soulection in this bishhhhh! Germany aswell, just to hang out with the homie Hi-One. Plus, it would be cool to see what people overseas think of my music. But I would be pleased to play anywhere. Might start working on some DJ’ing aswell.
TREEHOUSE: Who are your influences?
COEN RICE: This must be the hardest question for any producer. I always do whatever I like the most. But if I must say who my biggest inspiration must be, then they would be: Marcioz, Mr. Carmack, Point Point, Drake, William Crooks, Erykah Badu, Partynextdoor and Rusty Hook. ( not in this order tho)
TREEHOUSE: Any other passions beside music?
COEN RICE: I love to make graphic designs, the combo between a story and a good set of pixels put together is worth so much. You could tell a story with a single image. As for other passions… I love to work out, not no Arnold Schwarzenegger tho. Just wanna keep myself fit ( currently 85kg, 8 % bf you mad? Hahaha ). I also love to watch and play football. Arsenal ya gunners ya!
TREEHOUSE: What can you tell us about future projects?
COEN RICE: I got some collabs coming with some cool artists. And I want to start building on my debut EP. Hopefully I will release it mid-February. So excited to let you guys hear my new sound I’m working on.
TREEHOUSE: Who would you love to work with dead or alive?
COEN RICE: I would love to work with anybody man. We all learn from each other. I really wanted to work with J Dilla. This guy’s beats are so vibey, R.I.P. O… I remember, I would love to work with Khelani because her voice gives me goosebumps!
It really is great to have Coen apart of the SQUAD, cool and humble dude make sure you check him out!
