TreeHouse Meets Tobias Dray

September 24, 2015

I’d like to introduce the world to new member of the TreeHouse Vibes roster, Tobias Dray. The producer and all round vibe machine, Tobias Dray, is one definitely not just for the future, but for the present. From remixes and flips to original electronic sounds, he is not chained to any genre. Tobias stated to me very early on in our chats that his music would change and he would be experimenting with different sounds, basically giving me the head up that he does not put himself in a box and is a creative. That’s the TreeHouse Vibes way, a vibe is never just one genre it’s just music.

Listen:

Tobias Dray ~ Satellite

I got to find out more about Tobias Dray and his music journey in an exclusive interview.

TREEHOUSE: COULD YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF, AND TELL US WHERE YOU ARE FROM?

TOBIAS DRAY: Hey I'm Samuel Jacob Tobias Dray, 19 years old, born and raised in Paris.

I moved to London last year to do a music production/sound engineering course. I will be going into my second year this fall. I am at the beginning of my journey haven’t achieved nothing yet, and I just realized this year that school will do nothing for me, if I want to succeed into that world, I have to move by myself and do things on my own.

TREEHOUSE: WHEN DID YOU FIRST START MAKING MUSIC?

TOBIAS DRAY: I started making music at the end of middle school, beginning of high school. But it wasn't serious, I started seriously this year. I started on FL Studio, then moved to Logic Pro for a long time. And now I use Ableton because of CPU problems with Logic Pro X.

TREEHOUSE: WHAT KIND OF SOUND, WOULD YOU SAY YOU HAVE?

TOBIAS DRAY: I'd say I have an experimenting sound at the moment, but in a good way. By that I mean I'm not making something heartless with no chords, no structure with just strange noises layered others strange noises. I like having different atmospheres in one song, you can hear a track and think that there are two different ideas that I could split into two different tracks.

I'm always improving and each track for me is a big step, so my sound changes and will change, but the basics ideas are here.

TREEHOUSE: WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD?

TOBIAS DRAY:  That's a hard question [laughs]. It’s really tough because I don’t know all the places in the world.

There are some places that I’m keen to see and that I will see. But from where I have been so far, I'd say a secret beach in Ibiza, that was the best day of my life, but that's a loooong story to explain, I can write a book about that day [Laughs] I like Japan a lot too, love how respectful and polite people are.

TREEHOUSE: WERE HOPING TO READ THAT BOOK, WHAT ONE INSTRUMENT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD PLAY?

TOBIAS DRAY: I wish I could play the piano better. I get excited when I see various jazz pianists performing... I wish I could play the trumpet too, but I'm planning to learn, one day... Soon.

TREEHOUSE: WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR FIRST OVERSEAS SHOW TO BE?

TOBIAS DRAY: Anywhere. But L.A seems to be pretty dope; the movement of all that new music is quite concentrated there. Also I would love to have a show in Australia, to be honest, I'm planning to start DJ’ing this year in London to see if I like it. I love dancing and I'm the guy who's always doing some crazy moves when he's on fire, so why not try DJ’ing if I like music and to dance?

TREEHOUSE: WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?

TOBIAS DRAY:  I'm always stuck with that question because when I produce I'm just making music from ideas that are in my head, I'm not thinking like what other artists would do or anything like that.

But I know that my inspiration definitely comes from all the new music on SoundCloud. My top 10 would be; Jazztronik, Nujabes, Kanye West, Chet Baker, Sly and the Family Stone, Jamiroquai, Elis Regina, J.Cole, Chance The Rapper and Cashmere Cat. (Not in order). I know a top 10 is not small but I really can't get it smaller than that, even a top 10 is small for me!

TREEHOUSE: WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS BESIDE MUSIC?

TOBIAS DRAY: Anime is a passion of mine. I loved anime since I was a kid and didn't drop. First anime I ever watched was Digimon, and that was the Shit [laughs]. I think people need to stop viewing anime as a childish art form. Go watch NHK, Parasyte and 5cm Per Second.

TREEHOUSE: WHO WOULD YOU WANT TO WORK WITH, DEAD OR ALIVE?

TOBIAS DRAY: Kanye West, Pharrell and Noah Shebib. I know it's big, but you never know

TREEHOUSE: CAN YOU GIVE US ANY INFORMATION ABOUT FUTURE PROJECTS?

TOBIAS DRAY:  Not much, just working harder and planning to incorporate more vocals into my music to create catchy sounds. You sometimes need vocals in a song for it to be more memorable, I want my sound to touch more people, including me.

The sound of tomorrow is on route for everyone’s ear waves real soon, and finding artists such as Tobias Dray, illustrates that point. His versatility makes me pleasantly curious about his future tracks and projects. Satellite is an absolute anthem and we can definitely agree that the vocals give it the added lift. The track has a feel good factor, amazing vocals effortlessly carrying us throughout the track making it one of my favourites at the moment. Go check out Tobias Dray on all his social media platforms and MAKE SURE you listen to his new song “SATELLITE

Thank me later. THV
