DISCOVER: ZAK ABEL

September 3, 2015

A few weeks ago I was scrolling through Instagram when I noticed one of the users I'm following like a video. Out of curiosity I clicked on the video and I'm so glad I did. Usually I'm not one to pay attention to what the people I'm following are liking, but it was a guy with a guitar so obviously that drew me in to click on it. That's when I discovered Zak Abel.

So he's 19 ... From his tunes on SoundCloud to his posts on Instagram, this kid does not seem like he's 19 years old; and I mean that in a good way. He's one of those singer/songwriters that's new to the scene, but he has a bright future ahead of him. He's already collaborated with Tom Misch(that's already a big deal) Gorgon City, SG Lewis and Joker.  Here's some links to the collaborations:

Now that you've checked out those tunes, let's talk about that voice of his. He has such a unique and distinctive voice which makes him identifiable. People with voices like that were definitely made to be in the music industry. I listened to an interview with him ( posted on his SoundCloud page - https://soundcloud.com/rinsefm/drive-with-julie-x-zak-abel-interview ) and he talks about the fact when he was only 17 years old, he got an offer for a record deal ... school or record deal?

He chose the record deal and dropped out of school. Usually when I hear someone dropped out of school I'm quick to judge because school is my life, but I think that he made the right move and like I said, this kid has a bright future ahead of him. That being said, I also think he's an exception when it comes to that - meaning, stay in school kids! What really drew me in to find out more about Zak Abel was definitely that voice of his. If you've read my previous articles, you know I'm a jazz fanatic. Zak Abel definitely has that jazzy feel to his voice. Oh also he's super talented ... He plays the piano and drums.

On another note, he also seems like a super cool guy. Kind of reserved and a total sweetheart; from what he posts on Instagram that's the impression that I'm getting, he could also be a great actor and fooling us all, but I doubt it. Since he is fairly new to the music scene I hope all the fame and what not doesn't get to his head (Abel from the Weeknd is a prime example) ...  He's only 19 years old but definitely seems super mature for his age - insert emoji shock face when I found out he was 19..

I could totally go on gushing about Zak Abel but to save myself from looking like a total fan girl like the ones who crush on One Direction, check out his new EP that he just came out with - https://soundcloud.com/zakabel/sets/one-hand-on-the-future

Also, in case this article somehow gets read by Zak Abel himself, come do a gig in Toronto in the near future!
